Empowering Youth Through a Unique University Experience at UTSC

From August 13th to 15th, our partnership with Toronto Community Housing, UTSC, BGC East Scarborough, and the City of Toronto culminated in a transformative experience for the youth and families we serve. Hosted at the University of Toronto Scarborough campus (UTSC), the "Discover University" program offered BIPOC students in grades 11 and 12 a 3-day, 2-night immersion into university life. This program provided interactive sessions, workshops, and informational resources for both students and their parents, offering a comprehensive look into university life and support systems.

The experience was eye-opening for our students, giving them a clearer understanding of university life's academic and social aspects. They participated in various activities, including drum workshops, residence stays, and engaging interactions with current university students, all of which helped shape their educational aspirations.

The event kicked off with an Introduction Panel featuring U of T staff, followed by an African Drumming workshop and a buffet lunch. The students then took part in a vision board workshop led by a facilitator who shared her journey through the education system as a single mother.

We also offered workshops on financial resources, employment opportunities in Toronto, and social services, specifically designed for parents to help them navigate financial support for education. UTSC provided a space where students could interact with vendors and ask questions. The program concluded with a student panel discussion featuring Toronto Community Housing alumni who had successfully graduated from university, sharing their experiences. Additionally, a workshop was held by representatives from the TDSB, City of Toronto, and TCHC, who provided valuable information on the support they offer.

For many BIPOC students, the barriers to university—whether financial or social—can seem insurmountable. However, this program not only inspired our youth but it also reinforced our commitment at MAAT Youth Innovation and Cultural Centre to create opportunities that support their educational and housing needs. We are excited to continue our efforts to empower our youth and help them build a brighter future.
