We honour the land that we are on, which has been the site of human activity since time immemorial. It is the traditional territories of the Huron-Wendat, Anishinabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River First Nations.
Ontario is covered by 46 treaties and other agreements, and is home to many Indigenous Nations from across Turtle Island, including the Inuit and the Metis. These treaties and other agreements, including the One Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, are agreements to peaceably share and care for the land and its resources. Other Indigenous Nations, Europeans, and newcomers were invited into this covenant in the spirit of respect, peace, and friendship.
We are mindful of broken covenants, and we strive to make this right, with the land and with each other.
Many of us have come here as settlers, immigrants, newcomers in this generation or generations past. We also acknowledge those of us who came here forcibly, particularly as a result of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. Therefore, we honour and pay tribute to the ancestors of African Origin and Descent.
At BGC East Scarborough, equity, diversity, and inclusion are at the core of who we are and what we do. We believe that everyone—regardless of background, identity, or lived experience—deserves respect, dignity, and equal access to opportunity.
We actively work to challenge systemic barriers and create programs, spaces, and relationships that reflect the diversity of our community. Guided by our core values—Inclusion & Opportunity, Respect & Belonging, Empowerment, Collaboration, and Speaking Out—we strive to build a culture where everyone feels welcome, heard, and valued.
Our 2025 strategic priorities—Strengthening Operational Excellence, fostering a Culture of Belonging, cultivating a Thriving Workplace, and Inspiring Investment—ensure that equity and inclusion are embedded in every decision and action we take.
Together, we are building a stronger, more inclusive East Scarborough—where all youth and families can grow, lead, and thrive.
1. Strengthen Operational Excellence
We embed equity into every aspect of our operations—from governance and policy development to service delivery and resource allocation. By aligning our systems and practices with our values of Inclusion & Opportunity and Collaboration, we ensure transparency, accountability, and fairness in how we lead and serve. Operational excellence, guided by EDI principles, allows us to create a strong foundation for equitable access and sustainable community impact.
2. Foster a Culture of Belonging
Belonging is at the heart of inclusion. We are committed to cultivating spaces where youth, families, staff, and community members feel valued and respected for who they are. Grounded in our values of Respect & Belonging and Empowerment, we create environments that celebrate diversity, encourage authentic dialogue, and amplify the voices of those who have been historically underrepresented.
