Growing Leaders One Summer at a Time: Isaiah’s LIT Journey

For the past several years, our Leaders in Training (LIT) Program has welcomed youth ages 12 to 14 for a summer of growth, leadership, and hands-on learning. While many young people join expecting a fun camp experience, they leave with something much more valuable: the confidence and skills to become leaders in their schools, communities, and future workplaces.

This summer, one of our youths, Isaiah, experienced the program and how it has shaped his understanding of leadership.

When asked what he would say to another young person thinking about joining the program, Isaiah didn’t hesitate.

“I would tell them to join because the program provides a safe and fun space to learn skills that they can use when their time comes.”

The LIT Program creates an environment where our youth can step outside of their comfort zones, try new things, and discover their strengths and abilities as they transition into the new school year. Every day presents a new opportunity to build confidence while being supported by mentors and peers.

Before joining the program, Isaiah believed leadership was simply about being in charge. Today, his perspective has completely changed.

“Before I joined the camp, I thought being a leader meant being in control of other people. Now I believe it’s about helping people and using your talents to teach others how to achieve what they want and strengthen the abilities they may lack.”

Throughout the six-week program, youth spend dedicated time every day developing practical leadership skills through interactive training, activities, and reflection.

When asked about the most valuable lesson he has learned, Isaiah shared:

“The most valuable skill I’ve learned is patience and remembering that everyone has abilities that outshine others. Everyone is talented in their own way.”

Isaiah summed up the impact of the LIT Program in one simple sentence:

“It really opens your eyes about all the abilities you could learn.”

Leadership isn’t something we’re born with; it’s something we develop through experience, mentorship, and practice. That’s why every day of the LIT Program is intentionally designed to help participants discover new skills while learning more about themselves.

Youth participate in:

  • Daily leadership training using a structured leadership manual.
  • Lessons focused on communication, active listening, teamwork, self-awareness, strengths, and areas for growth.
  • Opportunities to lead younger campers through games and activities.
  • Indoor recreation and team-building challenges in the gym.
  • Daily community outings and field trips, including Sky Zone, mini golf, the beach, the ROM, movies, and a community BBQ at MAAT.
  • A six-week entrepreneurship and AI workshop led by external facilitators every Tuesday and Thursday.
  • A computer literacy program where participants build digital skills and earn a free Chromebook upon completion.

These experiences allow youth to practice leadership in real time while building confidence, responsibility, and problem-solving skills. Every summer, we watch young people arrive unsure of themselves and leave believing in their ability to make a difference.

We’re incredibly proud of Isaiah and all of our Leaders in Training who have committed themselves to growing this summer.
