Mental Health and Empowerment - Shaun

Guiding Mental Health and Empowerment at BGC East Scarborough

Within our community, now more than ever, mental health is taking a major precedent in the conversations we host collectively.

At the heart of the BGC East Scarborough is Shaun, who is our dedicated Mental Health Support Worker. Shaun wears many hats including Mental Health Ambassador, Youth Advocate, Role Model, and Mentor. Her role is multifaceted as the challenges our youth face, and her work is a cornerstone of the support we offer to the community.

Through her interactions with the youth at our club, Shaun has identified several key themes that impact their mental health and well-being including housing, employment, safety, stress, and more.

Youth are grappling with the pressures of limited long-term job opportunities, food insecurity, and the lack of safe and stable housing. These factors significantly contribute to their stress levels. Many young people express feelings of helplessness and uncertainty about achieving their dreams and building a future that feels secure and fulfilling.

“Our youth are more self-aware and resilient than often assumed. They are actively seeking mental health support, which is a testament to their strength and wisdom.” - shares Shaun.

“Male-identifying youth are beginning to talk more openly about their mental health needs, though female-identifying youth remain more likely to reach out for support.”

Shaun’s Vision for Youth Mental Wellbeing

Shaun’s hope is for our youth to be able to recognize the importance of mental health and take responsibility in nurturing these feelings early on. By doing so, it is a practice of strength and not weakness.

Shaun’s approach is rooted in positivity, understanding, and empowerment. She supports youth by:

  • Being a Positive, Non-Judgmental Role Model

Shaun’s open-minded and empathetic approach allows youth to feel seen, heard, and valued.

  • Encouraging Dreams and Individual Journeys

She reminds young people that success is unique to each individual and encourages them to set manageable goals and embrace their personal journey.

  • Community Outreach

Shaun meets youth where they are—literally and figuratively—building trust and fostering connections in the spaces they feel most comfortable.

  • Providing Resources

Whether it’s a book recommendation, a referral to a service, or advice on navigating challenges, Shaun goes the extra mile to research and share resources tailored to the needs of each youth.

At BGC East Scarborough, Shaun’s work is more than just a role; it is a mission to empower youth to thrive despite life’s challenges. Her commitment to creating a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment reflects our collective belief that every young person deserves the tools and encouragement to build a meaningful and fulfilling life.

Through Shaun’s dedication and the resilience of our youth, we continue to foster a community where mental health is prioritized, stigma is dismantled, and dreams are achievable.
